Clear Creek County officials told the Board of County Commissioners Sept. 16 that the courthouse basement will undergo asbestos remediation beginning Oct. 20 and continuing through Oct. 31, and that a sealed negative‑pressure containment and outside pumps will be installed.
County staff said the work follows a recent basement flood that revealed residual asbestos not remediated during earlier renovations. The county manager said the back entrance to the courthouse will be closed to employees and the public while remediation occurs. The county said a third party will perform continuous air monitoring during the work, and that the equipment and pumps outside the courthouse are part of containment operations and not a public health hazard.
Officials said the decision to complete the project during weekdays reduced contractor costs and should shorten the total time required; staff hope to return to the basement and move personnel back in by the end of the year. In the meantime, employees whose offices are within the sealed area will not have access to those offices.
