Committee approves $12,982 contribution to regional materials-management education campaign with SIMCOG

Oakland County commissioners approved an interlocal agreement with the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SIMCOG) to support a regional materials-management education campaign as part of the county’s work to develop a state-mandated materials-management plan.
Kristen and Whitney of the county’s economic development team said the materials-management plan will replace the county’s existing solid-waste plan under new state requirements. SIMCOG and participating counties are launching an education campaign targeted at elected officials and municipal staff; planned activities include one‑pagers, webinars, educational videos and outreach at regional assemblies. The county’s contribution to the regional campaign is $12,982, staff said.
Staff said the campaign is intended to improve municipal understanding early in the planning process because the final materials-management plan will require 67% approval among local units of government in the county before adoption. Commissioners approved the interlocal agreement on a 5-0 vote.
Staff said the regional approach helps spread costs and leverage consistent messaging across jurisdictions and that the county has discussed the campaign with corporation counsel and its materials-management planning committee.
