Macomb County approves 10-year Axon contract and budget amendment to equip deputies with taser handles

Macomb County’s Public Safety committee on Sept. 11 approved a budget amendment and a 10-year contract with Axon Enterprises for taser equipment and related services for the sheriff’s office.
Captain Jeff McPherson, representing the sheriff’s office, said the committee voted to approve a budget amendment of $444,638.25 for fiscal year 2025 to move funds into capital projects to fund the Axon taser program, and separately to approve a 10-year contract with Axon, effective Jan. 1, 2026 through Dec. 31, 2035, in the amount of $4,430,466. “We are requesting approval of a contract with Axon to provide axon Taser tens from 01/01/2026 until 12/31/2035 in the amount of $4,430,466,” McPherson said.
Committee members asked technical and operational questions. Lieutenant Conklin explained why taser “handles” have a five-year useful life and warranty and why the county expects Axon to refresh equipment at the mid-point of the contract: “...that electronic device degrades over time... Axon puts a 5 year warranty and a useful life of that product,” Conklin said. McPherson said Axon will purchase back expired devices and provide an allowance; the buyback and discounts were included in the contract pricing.
McPherson said one practical goal of the contract was to provide each road-patrol deputy with an assigned taser handle; currently the department uses shared “pool” devices in some areas. He said the contract includes pool devices for corrections and allows for additional handles to cover planned hiring.
Commissioners noted the contract includes negotiated savings; McPherson said Axon’s pricing includes approximately $1.3 million in discounts or allowances, including buyback credit. The committee recorded a 13–0 vote in favor of the budget amendment and contract.
The sheriff’s office said it will continue to manage serial-numbered assignment records for handles and will work with Axon to ensure end-of-life equipment is replaced and disposed of per contract terms.
