Board committee approves $797,219 mobile command vehicle purchase for emergency management

The Public Safety Committee approved on Sept. 11 the purchase of a new mobile command vehicle for Macomb County emergency management at a cost of $797,219.
Brandon Lewis, representing emergency management, described the vehicle as a 36-foot step van custom built by LDV Specialty Vehicles with modern communications and field command equipment. “The vehicle is a 36 foot step van equipped with modern technologies, making it a fully equipped and modern field mobile command center,” Lewis said. He said the purchase will be made through a cooperative purchasing agreement (HGAC) and that the money was available in the general fund after a July budget amendment moved funds from an emergency management grant fund.
Commissioners asked about expected use and disposition of the county’s existing older unit. Lewis said the county does not plan to keep the older unit for continued operational use because it is at the end of its useful life, but the county will seek the best disposition. Commissioners noted frequent deployments at planned events and for emergency response, and Lewis said the vehicle is used for about a dozen planned events per year and is also available for unplanned emergency deployments.
The committee recorded a 13–0 vote in favor of forwarding the purchase for full-board approval; the motion to recommend purchase passed at committee.
Lewis said lead time for the custom vehicle build is long and delivery is expected in late next year, and the county will finalize disposition of any replaced equipment before delivery.
