Board reviews intergovernmental agreement to join statewide public-safety radio network

Cochise County staff briefed the Board of Supervisors on an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) intended to connect the county’s radio system into a statewide network that would facilitate communications with the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), Yuma County and other partners. The briefing took place during the work session on Sept. 11.
Staff said the county received grant funding to purchase radios and related equipment; the IGA formalizes the network connection and mutual-aid arrangements so agencies can communicate across jurisdictions during emergencies. The system will allow county radios to use towers operated by other agencies and to ‘‘tap in’’ to the statewide network, giving sheriff’s deputies and other responders the ability to talk to neighboring counties and state public-safety partners.
Supervisors asked technical questions about how the radios operate on the network, IP addressing for devices, and the potential for mesh/“bounce” networking that can extend coverage without new tower construction. Staff described current capabilities and said further expansion is possible but not currently implemented.
