Gates County sets fluoride design target at 0.7 mg/L for water systems

At its Sept. 17 meeting the Gates County Board of Commissioners voted to set a 0.7 milligrams per liter fluoride level as the county’s public-health design target for its water system.
Commissioner Nathan Berryman moved the item under old business and said engineers and public-health advisers had provided options and requested a clear design-level target. “It is my position that we need to be at the 0.7,” Berryman said before making the motion.
A second was recorded and the board voted by show of hands. One commissioner stated an initial abstention but said he would “go with the group”; the board recorded the motion as approved and directed the county’s engineering firm to proceed with designs based on the 0.7 target.
County staff said the action provides the design firm a firm criterion for continued engineering work and proposal development. The board did not adopt a regulatory ordinance in the meeting; the vote directed staff and the county’s consultant to use 0.7 mg/L as the design parameter for forthcoming system changes.
