The Sarasota City Nuisance Abatement Board on Sept. 18 continued case number 25-02, regarding the property at 2518 North Links Avenue, to Oct. 16, 2025. The board first considered a motion to continue the case to Jan. 15, 2026, but that motion failed when Chair Linda Holland voted no. A subsequent motion to continue to Oct. 16, 2025 carried unanimously.
City Attorney Attorney Fernandez introduced the case and reported that the respondent, Miss Dunbar, was present and had asked for time to organize a response and possibly obtain legal assistance. Attorney Fernandez said she had spoken with Miss Dunbar and recommended a continuance so the respondent could obtain counsel or other assistance.
Board members asked procedural questions about the case history and evidence. SPD noted that the notice had been served by the city’s process servers and referenced an August service timestamp during the meeting. Board members discussed whether calls for service and the ongoing nature of the reported problems at the property would make a longer or shorter continuance appropriate; the board ultimately chose a 30-day continuance to the October meeting.
The board’s procedural sequence during the item: a motion to continue to Jan. 15, 2026 was put forward and seconded; the board called the question and an initial majority of members signaled "aye," but the chair voiced "no," and the motion failed. A new motion to continue to Oct. 16, 2025 was then made and seconded; the board voted in favor and the motion passed unanimously.
At the Oct. 16 hearing the city will present evidence and testimony about whether the property should be declared a nuisance, and the respondent will have the opportunity to respond or present a stipulation. If Miss Dunbar chooses to obtain counsel, the continuance is intended to allow time for her to do so. The board’s staff report at the meeting noted there were no new cases or other updates at that time.
The board closed the item by confirming the Oct. 16 continuance and instructing SPD and the city attorney to coordinate notice and any preparatory work needed for the next hearing.
