Summary
The Board of Public Works approved a rebid contract for structural repairs to the South Street parking ramp to Scicon Incorporated, including two alternates, for a total award of $176,200.
The Waukesha Board of Public Works voted Sept. 18 to award the South Street parking ramp structural-repair contract to Scicon Incorporated after a rebid that produced a low bid under budget.
Public Works staff said the project was rebid after the original bid included excessive quantities; the current solicitation separated work into a base bid and two alternates to allow award within the available budget. Scicon submitted the low bid for both the base and the alternates. Staff recommended including both alternates, for a combined recommended contract value of $176,200.
Board members asked whether Scicon has local experience; staff said the city’s facilities and construction manager, Joe Walter, had prior experience with the firm from work in Minnesota and that references were checked. Members also asked whether remaining budget could fund additional repairs; staff said the contract uses unit pricing by square footage, and that any additional quantities or repairs could be handled via a change order if needed. Staff noted they might seek a change order to replace damaged glass block in a top-floor stair tower with concrete block to make that area more substantial.
A motion to approve the bid and add the alternates carried unanimously.
