Council awards Badger Drive bus-wash base bid; underbody wash deferred for later funding

The Waukesha Common Council approved the Board of Public Works' recommendation on Sept. 16 to award the Badger Drive bus-wash replacement contract to Ross and White Company for the base bid of $299,000.
Board and staff discussion at the meeting noted that the base bid provides a functional bus wash but does not include an underbody flush system. The underbody flush was offered as an alternate priced by the bidder, and staff said adding it would require additional electrical work and about $80,000 more than the base bid. The board recommended proceeding with the base bid and asking staff to explore alternative funding sources if the council later wants to add the underbody-flush option.
Transit Manager Brian Engelking said the vendor indicated the underbody system will likely require additional electrical capacity; DPW staff are reviewing that cost. Several aldermen urged staff to consult other departments — including fire — for potential shared funding because underbody washing can extend vehicle life.
The council approved the base bid unanimously.
