Commission approves early design and demolition for Carwell Mountain visitor center

Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner David Salyers told the commission the revision adds demolition of an existing barn and that the barn is less than 50 years old and “does not require review by the Tennessee Historical Commission.” He said the early design phase was presented to the state architect on Aug. 20, 2025, and that the project was determined to be on schedule and in budget, with construction anticipated to start in 2026.
The commission voted unanimously to approve the revision and early design phase after a motion and second; the roll call showed Speaker Sexton, Treasurer Lillard, Commissioner Bryson and Comptroller Mumpower voting in favor.
The Department’s presentation described the approved scope as including a visitor center, maintenance facilities and park amenities; the revision specifically adds demolition of the existing barn so the new construction can proceed within the identified site footprint. No additional conditions or changes to funding were presented at the meeting.
