El Mirage council adopts youth advisory commission, seeks applicants for spring appointments

The El Mirage Common Council on Sept. 16 voted to adopt Resolution R25-09-11 establishing a Youth Advisory Commission and approving draft bylaws to guide its formation and work.
The commission is intended to engage local young people in community service, leadership development and periodic reporting to the council. City staff presented a proposed timeline that would open applications this fall and bring final appointment recommendations back to the council in March 2026; the initial terms would run through June 30, 2027.
"We're excited to engage the youth of El Mirage in community service leadership," City staff said while presenting the resolution. Supporters on the council described the commission as a long‑awaited step that could increase civic participation and help develop future leaders.
Council Member Eldridge said the commission offers meaningful youth engagement and carries potential to broaden community involvement. "I think this is an excellent idea," Eldridge said.
Concerns about cost and staffing were raised and directly addressed during the discussion. Council Member Gentry asked whether the city would hire new staff to run the program; city staff clarified there would be no additional hires. "There is no additional staff," city staff said, adding that current employees — including Sean Van Roe, Amber Wakeman and Macy Walker — will lead and staff the commission's work.
The council voted to adopt the resolution by motion: Vice Mayor Parsons moved adoption and Council Member Winston seconded; the motion passed with all voting in favor.
City staff encouraged council members to help spread the word to ensure an initial strong pool of applicants; the council indicated it will make outreach part of upcoming city events.
