Residents oppose proposed slaughterhouse rezoning on Cortez Road; hearing continued

Neighbors and community groups told the Jacksonville City Council on Sept. 9 they oppose a rezoning request that would allow an animal-processing operation near Cortez Road and surrounding residential lots.

Speakers said the proposed facility — described in the application as a meat-processing operation to supply nearby grocers and restaurants — would create odor, noise and water-contamination risks for a community that relies heavily on private wells and septic systems. Multiple residents asked the council to deny an industrial rezoning and instead preserve the property’s residential character.

Why it matters: The Land Use and Zoning (LUZ) vote would change allowable uses on the parcel. Opponents said the use (live-animal processing/slaughterhouse) is incompatible with neighboring single-family parcels, could increase traffic on local roads already described as hazardous by residents, and could create long-term groundwater and air-quality impacts that are difficult or impossible to reverse.
