Committee backs in-kind $300,000 Union Square Alliance grant for permanent stage sound pillars

The Budget and Finance Committee on Sept. 10 voted unanimously to forward to the full Board of Supervisors a resolution authorizing the Recreation and Park Department to accept an in-kind grant from the Union Square Alliance valued at approximately $300,000 to install two 20-foot metal pillars and an associated speaker system at the Union Square Plaza stage.
Susan Seiden of Recreation and Park’s partnerships division said the pillars and a permanent sound mount would allow performers to plug into a permanently installed system instead of hauling portable sound equipment for each event. Seiden said the Union Square Alliance has been programming activities on the plaza frequently since early 2024 and that the infrastructure would streamline logistics, improve audience sound projection and support daily activations and concerts.
Ken Rich, representing the Union Square Alliance, said the group has procured a contractor and secured permits and expects to begin work after Board approval, with a ribbon-cutting targeted for March (year in transcript). The department would own and maintain the pillars; the Union Square Alliance would provide the speakers and installation as an in-kind grant.
There were no public speakers opposed to the item. The committee voted 3–0 (Dorsey, Chen, Chan) to forward the resolution with a positive recommendation.
