The Metropolitan and Economic Development Committee on Monday appointed Courtney Rizman and David Herron to the City Market Corporation board, approving both nominations by voice vote at the committee meeting on Sept. 15.
Courtney Rizman, who works for Downtown Indy Inc., told the committee she has worked downtown for 25 years and has experience with event management and downtown programming, including 14 years with Pacers Sports & Entertainment. "I've always worked downtown. . . I'm really excited about the development that's to come and excited to be a part of that dialogue and decision making," Rizman said.
Committee members asked Rizman about benchmarking and planning for the City Market's relaunch. Councilor Derek Cahill asked whether the board would compare the market to successful models elsewhere; Rizman deferred detailed benchmarking questions to the board chair and the Department of Metropolitan Development but said she was "happy to be a part of that." Another councilor encouraged studying markets in cities such as Milwaukee to guide extended hours and programming strategies.
David Herron, executive director of the Business Ownership Initiative at the Indy Chamber of Commerce, said his 15 years of work with entrepreneurs and on small-business banking and financial literacy informed his interest in the City Market board. "Of course, it's a great place to gather some food, but also we have entrepreneurs that are trying to grow and scale their business," Herron said, describing vendor support as a priority.
The committee took voice votes to approve each appointment after members indicated their support. The chair called for public speakers on each proposal; no members of the public addressed the committee on either nomination before the votes.
Why it matters: The City Market Corporation board will play a role in planning the market’s reopening and vendor strategy; councilors pressed for benchmarking against similar markets and for board-driven planning so the market reopens with robust hours and programming.
Additional details: The two items were identified as proposal number 277 (Courtney Rizman) and proposal number 278 (David Herron) on the committee agenda. Committee members who spoke during the agenda items included Councilor Maggie Lewis (chair), Councilor Derek Cahill and Councilor Brianne Delaney, among others.
