Marion County jail population 2,355 on Sept. 15; officials report no crisis mode

Major Tia Shanklin Woods presented the Marion County jail population to the Criminal Justice Planning Council on Sept. 15, reporting a total of 2,355 inmates and saying the facility was not in crisis mode.
"Our MA count today was 2,355," Major Tia Shanklin Woods said, listing 2,016 males, 314 females, 23 juvenile males and 2 juvenile females. She said nine inmates were categorized as "HEA 10 o 6" and that the 90-day average for that category was eight.
Woods provided a charge-level breakdown: 145 inmates with murder charges; 102 with felony 1 counts; 153 felony 2; 262 felony 3; 283 felony 4; 614 felony 5; 443 felony 6; 12 listed as felony other; 163 misdemeanors; 39 with MC or temporary cases; and 132 classified as "other," a category the presenter defined to include federal inmates or individuals whose charge level was not yet defined at reporting time.
Woods said she would normally display charts showing the jail population against capacity and crisis-mode thresholds but did not have the charts available at the meeting. She reported the facility was not in crisis mode as of the Sept. 15 count. No follow-up questions were recorded after the presentation.
The council chair, Ryan Mears, used later business to propose that the next meeting include presentations on mental-health responses across partner agencies, including community corrections programs, law enforcement's MCAT team and court perspectives. That proposal was discussed but did not result in formal action at the Sept. 15 meeting.
