Jack Schoolfield, a Whiteville resident, said heavy rain last Sunday left a drainage ditch on his block unable to carry water, making the street impassable and flooding nearby Felix Smith Park.
"I'm sure all of you guys saw the rain we had this last Sunday, and I wanted to frame the council's attention that the drainage ditch on my block was actually not draining," Schoolfield said. "It was more than a foot underwater, and that caused ... the park was completely underwater, and it actually put my garden and my chicken coop under ... and flooded my crawl space."
Schoolfield gave his address as 113 East Calvin Street and said the standing water made the street unsafe to travel. Another resident at the meeting added that there is no ditch in that location and that water simply floods yards and properties.
A city manager at the meeting said he was taking note of Schoolfield's report. No repair schedule or specific department referral was announced during the session and no formal vote or action was recorded.
Schoolfield asked whether there was a different department he should contact for follow-up; the city manager acknowledged the report and took the comment for follow-up but did not provide further details at the meeting.
