City seeks appropriation of property at 1525 Cherry St. for Cherry–Bancroft safety and ADA improvements

Jeremy Michael Isaac, director of the Department of Transportation, asked the council on Sept. 16 to authorize the director of law to proceed with appropriation of property owned by HG Toledo, LLC at 1525 Cherry Street to permit a safety and realignment project at the intersection of Cherry and Bancroft.
Isaac said the project includes realigning Canton Street at Cherry Street, median and signal improvements, resurfacing and utility work, and installation of new sidewalks and pedestrian ramps to meet current ADA standards. He said the property is needed to provide room for sidewalks and ramps required by the design.
Councilwoman Williams noted the city had previously secured property on the opposite (Popeye’s) side of the intersection and that Rite Aid had not been communicative; Isaac confirmed the city is still working with the property owners and that acquisition of the 1525 Cherry Street parcel is delaying the project. He told council the project would start “as soon as we can acquire that property.”
Isaac requested council’s procedural approval to move forward (SEP) and answered questions about timeline. No formal appropriation vote or finalized agreement was recorded during the agenda-review meeting. The item will return for formal council action if the city proceeds with condemnation or negotiated acquisition steps.
