Sales Tax Overview Committee reports progress on animal shelter, Mohawk Park drainage and museum work

Members of the City of Tulsa’s Sales Tax Overview Committee presented updates to the council on capital projects funded by sales tax revenues, including construction progress at the new animal shelter, park improvements and ongoing golf course rehabilitation at Mohawk Park.
Linda Jenkins, District 1 representative and vice chair of the Sales Tax Overview Committee, and Maia Trelevin, District 6 representative, briefed the council. Jenkins highlighted a City of Tulsa Animal Services post noting that roughly half of the shelter’s concrete slab is complete and described the new facility near 30th Street North and Pawnee Drive as featuring modern veterinary and medical spaces, expanded kennels and community space for education and volunteer activities. The presenters said the animal shelter project is approximately a $14 million program and is supported by city funding and community contributions.
Trelevin and Jenkins also provided updates on other vision projects. They said construction of a “sky stair” inside the Gilcrease Museum is progressing and that a completed shade structure, turf and fencing at McClure Park will improve pool‑area amenities.
Jenkins provided detail on Mohawk Park golf course renovations funded through IOT (Infrastructure, Opportunity and Transformation) allocations. She said Mohawk has installed topsoil and more than seven acres of sod, aerified greens, and undertaken programming including junior golf, veterans clinics, and women’s clinics. She told the council that since April the course has been closed a cumulative 55 days because of flooding, resulting in an estimated loss of more than $242,000 in revenue; staff are meeting with a hydrologist to evaluate drainage and recommend improvements.
Councilors thanked the presenters for the report; no policy action was required. The committee representatives said they will return with further progress reports at future meetings.
