Tulsa commission sets new meeting time, backs park-stage support and finalizes event logistics for Native American Day

The Greater Tulsa Indian Affairs Commission voted to change its regular meeting start time to 5:30 p.m., approved providing financial assistance to the parks department to support use and maintenance of the department’s stage for Native American Day, and confirmed logistics for the Oct. 13 Native American Day celebration at Dreamkeepers Park.
The chair opened discussion noting city staff that support commissions had requested earlier meeting times so employees would not stay late. Commissioners debated start times and ultimately a motion to move meetings to 5:30 p.m. was made and seconded; the chair called the voice vote and recorded no opposition. The commission directed staff to make the calendar and public-notice changes so the new time can take effect next month.
Earlier in the meeting the commission approved the August meeting minutes by voice vote before proceeding to the guest presentation.
On Native American Day planning, the commission’s committee reports said the event is scheduled at Dreamkeepers Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Native American Day Committee reported 51 parade entries — 19 of them school-related — and weekly planning meetings through the event. The Muscogee (Creek) Light Horse will support event security, bringing officers, an armored vehicle for display and a mobile command unit; the committee said the group will also provide two officers the night before for setup security.
Commissioners discussed trouble renting an outside stage and the park department’s mobile stage (with hydraulic equipment) that the commission has used in prior years. The commission moved and seconded a motion to offer financial help to the parks department to address stage repairs if needed; the motion passed by voice vote. The chair said she would prepare the paperwork to make the support official.
Finally, the chair entertained a motion to adjourn the regular meeting and move into executive session to select Dreamkeeper award winners; that motion passed by voice vote and the commission entered executive session.
Ending: Staff was tasked with updating the public calendar, issuing public notice of the time change, and distributing calendar invites and setup details for the Oct. 13 event.
