CRA awards $880,541.73 contract to replace roundabouts with raised intersections on Northwest Sixth Avenue

The Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency approved a construction contract to remove two roundabouts on Northwest Sixth Avenue and replace them with raised intersections and other traffic-calming measures.

Kimberly Vasquez, CRA project manager, told the board the work is part of a tactical and urbanism beautification plan approved by the board in May 2023 and a last major streetscape refurbishment for Sixth Avenue since 2012–13. The project removes the roundabouts at Sixth and Eighth streets, installs traffic-calming raised tables, and addresses the existing four-way stop at Northwest 10th Street.

Vasquez said the CRA issued an invitation to bid, received five responses and that Alexander & Johnson Project Management and Development Inc. was deemed the most responsive and responsible bidder by procurement; the contract amount is $880,541.73. She said the work will require a maintenance-of-traffic plan, outreach door hangers to nearby residents and advance signage, and that construction is expected to take about 180 days after mobilization. A contractor representative was present at the hearing.

Public input: No members of the public spoke in opposition during the public hearing for this item. Several commissioners urged robust resident notification in advance of construction; Commissioner Perkins asked staff to avoid scheduling work during high-traffic times such as local high-school events.

The board approved the construction agreement in a roll-call vote.

What follows: Staff said it will schedule a pre-construction meeting with the contractor and coordinate maintenance-of-traffic plans, police and school-event scheduling. The project is funded from CRA capital funds in the Northwest district budget.
