Mayor proposes new Senior Services department funded by vehicle-study savings under 'GOLD' plan

Mayor Bordelon told commissioners Sept. 8 he plans to create a Senior Services department — part of a package he calls the GOLD plan (Generational Opportunities for Legacy) — and to fund it using savings identified through a review of the city’s take-home vehicle policy.
The mayor said the vehicle review has already begun and that a report will be returned to the commission. He said the senior department budget could not be added to the first reading of the fiscal 2026 budget because the commission must first approve the creation of the department; staff will identify dollar amounts for the second-reading budget submission.
Commissioners expressed support for more senior services and said staff will need to define program scope, funding sources and operations. The mayor and staff said additional work will be required to identify where funds will come from and to develop service plans; staff will return with details in subsequent meetings. The item was noted for future inclusion in the upcoming budget discussion.
