Public works seeks approval of public-information program to pursue deeper NFIP discount

Public works director Sam May asked the commission Sept. 8 to adopt a Program for Public Information (PPI) as part of the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System (CRS) audit. Staff said the city’s previous audit cycle lowered North Lauderdale’s CRS rating from 9 to 7, yielding a 15% discount for residents with flood insurance, and that the PPI could help secure a rating of 6 and a 20% discount.
May described the PPI as a written outreach plan that documents how the city will disseminate flood-risk information to residents. He said the PPI committee included insurance specialist Phil Kittle from Creative Financial Network, and two municipal flood professionals who are North Lauderdale residents: Robin Soudin (assistant public works director, Lauderdale Lakes) and Matt Thompson (public works director, city of Plantation). City staff on the committee included the public information officer, the public works superintendent and the public works director.
Staff said the PPI will be submitted to CRS auditors as part of the five-year audit process; auditors award points for documented outreach activities, and accumulated points determine CRS rating steps and resultant insurance discounts. The item was placed on the consent calendar for formal approval at the commission meeting the next day.
