"We have been awarded that grant," the chief said, adding that the council is still awaiting the actual dollar figure needed to begin implementation. The chief said the co-responder will relieve officers of many mental-health-related duties, provide follow-up and counseling, and will allow opioid-abatement funds to be used for education, training and follow-up services tied to the program.
The chief also reported progress on an equipment issue. He said three Motorola cameras that had been nonfunctional are now repaired and all replacement parts have been installed after staff and vendor work; Tyler (a city staff member) was credited for coordinating with Motorola.
Finally, the chief announced that the department will participate in the national Coffee with a Cop event on Oct. 1 at the local McDonald's from 8–10 a.m., with the chief and at least one officer present.
Council members asked about promotion; the chief said the department will share information on social media and provide materials to the city for wider publicity. No formal council action followed; the update was informational.
