Northwest Focal Point executive director previews fall–winter events, requests Thanksgiving donations

- A monthly farmers market serving about 70 people; one market was scheduled for the day after the meeting.
- Fall Prevention Week, the week of Sept. 22, with health talks in English and Spanish.
- Chorus performances on Oct. 13 at 11:30 a.m. and a larger in-house holiday production on Dec. 9 at 11:30 a.m.
- An International Folk Festival on Oct. 24 where participants are invited to dress in national colors and share food and stories.
- A Halloween costume parade on Oct. 31 at 11:30 a.m.; a bowling tournament on Nov. 14; and Thanksgiving Basket Day on Nov. 18.
- A trip to Tradewinds Park to see the Fantasy of Lights on Dec. 11; a holiday “race” and ugly-sweater day on Dec. 15; big bingo on Dec. 26; and a noon-year’s toast on Dec. 31.
The executive director said the center is accepting donations for Thanksgiving baskets, and asked for nonperishable food items, toiletries, pies and frozen poultry. “I think last year we did, I think, 70 baskets,” the director said; the transcript does not provide a precise tally beyond that remark.
The director also reported that a telecommunications-relay or assistive-device provider recently visited the center to distribute amplified phones and will return Oct. 8 at about 9:30 a.m. for another session. The provider conducts brief hearing tests and explains device operation to recipients, the director said.
Board member Simone commented that the senior center is “a resident’s home away from home,” thanking staff for the center’s programming. Other board members offered brief praise and encouragement during the report; no substantive changes to programming or budgets were directed at the meeting.
