Marietta Parks update: events, West Dixie drainage work and bond‑funded improvements

Rich Buss and other Parks staff described upcoming events including Coffee Cryptids and Campfire (Atherton Square), youth basketball registration deadlines, Movies on the Square, the Harvest on the Square event and the Brown Bag concert series. Staff also said the city is accepting scarecrow entries for Harvest Fest and listed deadlines for registration.
On capital work, staff reported continued site investigations and repairs at West Dixie Park, where crews encountered an unexpected French drain and groundwater conditions while connecting sewer lines; crews plan additional French drain work to address localized standing water. Parks staff said the recent discovery should help explain prior groundwater observations and that they “buttoned that up today.”
Parks staff summarized the bond and grant funding picture: the council's $26 million park bond, combined with land transactions, grants and interest earnings, produced just over $30 million available for parks projects, staff said. The department has used bond funds and leveraged three large federal grants to expand parks, complete renovations and open new facilities, staff said.
Staff also reviewed specific parks (Victory Park, Laurel Park, Elizabeth Porter Park) and noted ongoing trail and playground work; a pre‑construction meeting has occurred for a trail project and the contractor’s start date is pending.
No formal council action was taken during the agenda review on park project contracting; staff said grand‑opening dates and bid schedules will be provided as projects reach completion.
