Town traffic staff reported results from a driver‑feedback sign placed on Potomac Station Drive (near the Fort Evans outlet area) and told the Traffic Commission the initial month of data shows speeds above the posted 25 mph limit.
“The data indicates that the 80 fifth percentile speed is 38, and the average speed is 31.7. And the posted speed limit is 25,” a staff member told commissioners. Staff said the dataset covered about one month and recommended continuing monitoring because nearby development and outlet traffic could shift patterns.
Commissioners asked staff to examine speeds further down the roadway toward Battlefield Parkway and to compare behavior at different distances from the feedback sign. Commissioners also discussed traffic‑calming options — including rumble strips or raised tables — but staff cautioned those remedies are costly and can create drainage or noise issues and might affect emergency vehicle response.
The commission did not adopt any new physical countermeasures at the meeting; staff said they will collect another month or two of data and report back. Members also discussed the program’s broader rollout and noted the commission will consider requests for driver feedback signs when budgeting for the coming season.
