Cooper City Commission adopts tentative millage rate of 5.845

The Cooper City Commission on Sept. 11 adopted a proposed millage rate of 5.845 for fiscal year 2025–26, the commission unanimously approved the rate during the first of two required public hearings on the city’s tentative budget.
City Manager Erwin read the resolution into the record as required by state law and told the commission, “the proposed millage rate of 5.845 for the general fund budget is a 6.89% increase over the rollback rate of 5.4683.” The reading was done pursuant to Section 200.065 of the Florida Statutes, as the manager noted earlier in the hearing.
The millage vote followed a short period of discussion; Commissioners Katzmann, Mallozzi and Smith registered their support during the roll call to the motion, and the mayor and remaining commissioners also voted yes. Commissioner Katzmann said, “I support lowering the millage. Thank you.”
The action sets the tentative levy that the commission will formally consider again at the second public hearing required to adopt the final millage and budget. The manager told the panel they will vote on the millage first and then on the budget at the follow-up hearing.
The resolution was read on the record as “resolution 25‑57” for the commission’s millage-setting action and the reading itself was identified as the public notice required by state statute.
No members of the public addressed the commission on the millage during the hearing.
The commission’s vote on the millage was taken during the Sept. 11 session; commissioners recorded their votes on the public record as follows: Commissioner Smith — yes; Commissioner Mallozzi — yes; Commissioner Katzmann — yes; Commissioner Schroeder — yes; Mayor Curran — yes. The manager said the millage vote will be followed by the discussion and required vote on the tentative budget.
