Richmond Public Schools reports SOL gains, multilingual learner progress; feasibility study due for Southside Technical Center

A representative of Richmond Public Schools updated the Education and Human Services committee on statewide Standards of Learning (SOL) test results and the Southside Technical Center planning process.
The speaker said RPS is up for the second year in a row in reading, math, science and history and highlighted faster growth for economically disadvantaged students: “While we are still overall below the state, over the last two years the state has grown 2 percentage points, while RPS has grown 10 percentage points,” the school representative told the committee. The presenter also said RPS now meets the state average in reading performance for multilingual learners.
On career and technical education facilities, the representative said RPS expects to receive a contracted feasibility plan for the Southside Technical Center that will likely be ready in October. The plan will outline cost estimates, construction needs and a realistic timeline; the speaker said those findings will be shared with the school board and the standing committee when available.
Committee members praised the gains and encouraged coordination with the city’s Future of Workforce Commission as RPS advances plans for the technical center.
