Residents press Polk County for speed bumps and drainage fixes on Freelander, Tangelo

Two residents from the Highland Park Manor area spoke during the Sept. 16 general public comment period to thank the board for recent approvals and press for quicker implementation of traffic calming and drainage work.
Cassandra Richards, of 2357 Freelander Road in Lake Wales, told commissioners she had spoken with county staff and said she supported moving forward with Tangelo and Freelander work immediately while continuing outreach on other roads. She said she will enlist neighbors to attend future meetings so the commission can hear firsthand what occurs on the roadway. Richards told the board she is “working on the people that lives on that road to come to the county commission this meeting and let you know exactly what goes on on that road.”
Diane Borders, of 2224 Evie Street in Lake Wales and a Highland Park Manor resident, thanked the commission for approving traffic-calming measures and speed bumps but asked when the county will install them, saying drivers “have no respect for our community, the neighborhood, all the children.” Borders also raised unfinished drainage work and said some streets still have standing water as the rainy season begins. Commissioner staff asked county staff (identified in the chamber) to follow up; Mr. Jarvis in the backroom was asked to address the drainage concerns.
No formal action was taken during the public-comment period; both residents asked staff to follow up and to keep the community informed about installation timing and drainage completion.
