Commission approves series of grant applications and routine state allocations

Solid waste and law-enforcement allocations The board accepted a Solid Waste Management Grant (CW013) from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, authorized at an amount “not to exceed $93,750.50” as noted in the grant description. Staff said the state allocates the grant to supplement county landfill and solid-waste operations because local fees do not fully cover costs. The board also accepted the countywide law-enforcement allocation (countywide grant) that is distributed to local law-enforcement agencies based on population; no dollar amount for that allocation was specified in the presentation.
Florida Commerce 'Rebuild Florida' applications Commissioners authorized staff to submit multiple applications to the Florida Commerce Rebuild Florida Storm Infrastructure Repair Program (IRP) to repair and harden storm-damaged bridges and other critical infrastructure. Staff described proposed applications that would target several county bridges (applications referenced County Road 630 and other county bridge locations), structural repairs and resilience measures and asked board authorization for the county manager or chair to sign required documents and accept funds if awarded. The board approved those submissions and authorizations.
Hardee County Health Department and waterway debris removal The board also approved submission of an IRP application to address repairs at the Hardee County Health Department facility and a separate application to remove debris from the Peace River to improve boating, water rescues and access for law enforcement. Staff said these projects are priorities for county infrastructure resilience and public safety.
Votes and authorizations Motions to accept the Solid Waste Management Grant CW013 and the countywide allocation, and to authorize submission of the Florida Commerce IRP applications were made and seconded; all motions passed unanimously (5–0). For the IRP bridge applications staff requested authorization to sign documents and to accept funds if the awards exceed standard delegated amounts; the board authorized the manager/chair to execute documents on the county’s behalf.
Next steps Staff will finalize and submit the grant applications and will return to the board to accept awards and execute grant agreements if funds are offered. The board did not appropriate new county matching funds at the meeting; staff said grant applications may include required match language and that future appropriation requests would be brought forward as needed.
