Residents praise Mallard Lane repairs and urge council to reinstate Music on Main

Pam Harper told the council she and other residents were "filled with joy and gratitude" to see orange cones and crews restoring Mallard Lane, calling it a major artery that should connect parts of the city. Harper also thanked the council for removing decorative posts at Howard and Lake Drive that she said presented a hazard.
Julie Downs, identified in the meeting as the initial sponsor of Music on Main, said the event was canceled and future events postponed while procedures are evaluated. Downs told the council volunteers and local sponsors had provided most of the event’s funding and organizational effort and said she was not contacted before a volunteer informed her the event was canceled. "What are we going to do? How are we going to continue to improve the quality of life for all of our citizens yet still address the diversity and have that place where everyone wants to go?" she asked.
Leslie Hill, who identified herself as a long-time community center president, denied allegations that she "owned" the community center and said she has worked to support local children and the facility. Hill said she does not oppose improvements and that she wants the community center to be a place for everyone.
No formal action followed these comments; the council took the items under consideration and moved to the consent agenda.
