Local resident urges council to preserve Smith Public Library’s collections and patron access

A Wylie resident urged the city council to maintain the Smith Public Library's ability to curate its collection and preserve unrestricted access to books for library patrons during a public comment at the Sept. 9 meeting.
Bethany Sullivan of 417 Rush Creek Drive addressed the council during the citizen participation portion of the meeting to urge the city to preserve the Smith Public Library’s collection policies and public access to materials.
Ms. Sullivan said she was speaking voluntarily and said that “information is power and choosing how to use that information is freedom.” She told council that being able to access “any book by any author on any topic” at the local library is a fundamental right and added that parents retain the right to monitor what their children read but that parental monitoring “doesn't overcome my rights to have unrestrained access to information.” She closed by asking council to “preserve my freedom” and to continue allowing the library “to curate a collection that meets the needs of all its various patrons.”
City staff recorded that one speaker sign‑up form had been submitted for non‑agenda public comment and that comments were limited to three minutes per individual. No other public comment on non‑agenda items was made at the meeting.
