The Galveston Landmark Commission on Sept. 15 recommended approval of a Galveston landmark designation for the Peter and Elena Mori grocery and dwelling at 1201 Post Office, finding the property a surviving example of a late-19th-century Galveston corner store and noting its connections to the city’s Italian-American commercial history.
City staff told the commission that 26 public notices were sent for the designation request and that staff recommends approval with standard conditions. The staff report described the property as constructed in 1893 and surviving the 1900 storm, retaining a high degree of integrity despite minor additions. Staff said the property historically served as a community hub where residents purchased groceries, oysters, fish, beer and later sandwiches and ice cream; staff also highlighted Peter Mori’s operation of a grocery and tavern and noted that Elena Mori continued the business after Peter’s death in 1903.
No members of the public spoke at the hearing and the applicant was not present; staff said the applicant sent regrets. A commissioner moved to recommend approval per staff recommendations and Commissioner Allen seconded; the motion passed. Staff advised that the Planning Commission will hear the request on Sept. 16, 2025, and that City Council has final decision authority, with a City Council hearing scheduled for Oct. 23, 2025, per the staff report.
