The Austin Tourism Commission on Sept. 10 welcomed Danny Pruitt as a newly seated commissioner. Pruitt told the commission he has lived in Austin since 2003 and described a background in arts and culture, including work at the Long Center and Fusebox Festival.
Staff liaison Felicia Burleson told the commission there were two vacancies heading into the meeting but that recruitment was underway and should reduce the open seats before the next meeting. Chair Daniel Ronan later reported movement on District 1 nominations and that Council Member Chichevalla’s seat remained outstanding; he asked commissioners to submit candidate suggestions for the remaining vacancy.
The commission also reviewed its “road map” of agenda topics for the rest of 2025 and agreed to reserve the October meeting for a vote on the 2026 meeting calendar. Commissioners noted the commission should avoid canceling multiple meetings in a calendar year; staff reminded members that repeated missed meetings risks administrative consequences for the body.
A commissioner asked for a future briefing on the city’s “legacy business” designation after recent news about Red River cultural-district businesses and rent arrears for a specific venue. Commissioners suggested inviting local venue owners and Preservation Austin to describe the legacy-business application process and implications.
Ending: Staff will add a legacy-business briefing and the 2026 calendar vote to upcoming agendas and continue outreach to council offices to fill the remaining appointment(s).
