National City Library board updates: trust-fund warrants, new roof, 20th anniversary and tool-library growth

At its meeting, the National City Library Board discussed several operational updates: clarification that warrants presented reflect the library trust fund only, plans for a new roof funded by the city, the library’s recent 20th anniversary event and growing usage of a newly launched tool library.
Board members asked about the consent agenda and whether warrants shown to the board included both trust and general fund expenditures. Library staff clarified the warrants for board approval were limited to the library trust fund and noted previous reports had at times included other expenditures in error. “It does say that it's only supposed to be the library trust fund,” a staff member said, explaining that items such as a few databases, materials and supplies are paid from the trust fund.
The board heard that the city’s public works and engineering department will fund and oversee a new roof for the library. Staff said the city council approved the project in a recent meeting and a contractor is scheduled; a staff member said she expected to have more details after a meeting with public works and the contractor next Tuesday.
Library staff also reviewed recent programming and events. The library held a 20th anniversary celebration last Saturday that drew “at least a couple hundred people” over two hours, with the fire and police departments attending and family activities for children.
Board members asked for attendance figures; staff said they would obtain a more accurate count from the entrance counter. Staff also said the library will hold a Friends-sponsored holiday raffle and open house in December.
Separately, the board discussed the tool library, which added an online reservation feature that lets patrons view inventory and reserve items for pickup. Library staff reported about 450 total checkouts since the tool library opened and said commonly borrowed items include mowers and gardening tools, with occasional checkouts of chainsaws and hedge trimmers. “We’re getting quite a lot of people now,” staff said.
The board set its next meeting for Oct. 1. No formal votes or policy changes on these updates were recorded at the meeting.
