The Colleyville Board of Appeals voted 5-0 to grant a variance allowing a larger-than-permitted sign at 6630 Colleyville Boulevard (case SC 25-3).
The variance, approved after a staff presentation and comments from the applicant, authorizes a freestanding sign with an area of about 85 square feet and a height of about 7 feet, exceeding the Land Development Code limit of 60.5 square feet and 5.5 feet, respectively. City staff said they received no letters of support or opposition and are neutral on the request.
Staff told the board the property is zoned CC1 with a commercial future land-use designation and that the request is intended to restore the sign to its original appearance after it was struck by a vehicle. Staff showed photos of the previous sign and the proposed replacement and noted an existing foundation at the site would be reused.
Ken Green, the applicant and property owner, described the sign as a restoration of the original Chamber Center sign. Green said he had developed several nearby properties and showed photos of similar signs at 6508, 6513, 6515 and 6500 Colleyville Boulevard. "I just want them all to look the same and I want my sign back that I had before," Green said.
Board members asked a few clarifying questions about size and compatibility with surrounding signs; one member noted there are other, taller signs on that stretch of Colleyville Boulevard. Member Deacon moved to approve the variance. The roll-call vote recorded Commissioner Holland, Commissioner Schaller, Commissioner Deacon, Commissioner Ramirez and the chair voting "aye." The motion passed 5 to none.
After the vote, the chair said city staff would work with the parties on the implementation details. No letters of opposition or support were filed with staff, and no formal conditions beyond the variance parameters were recorded in the meeting discussion.
The meeting closed after the board disposed of the agenda item and adjourned.
