Cecil County school leaders weigh moving high‑school graduations to Bob Carpenter Center

Cecil County Public Schools presented a proposal Sept. 10 to move high‑school commencement ceremonies from on‑campus stadiums to the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware, saying the indoor venue would produce a more consistent, accessible and weather‑resilient experience for graduates and families.

The proposal, introduced by Associate Superintendent Jenny Hammer and detailed by Superintendent Shawn Lawson and school principals, emphasized predictable scheduling, improved audiovisuals and on‑site parking and security. "The proposal is to host graduation ceremonies at the Bob Carpenter Center," Hammer told the Board of Education, citing recent local weather interruptions and equipment problems that shortened or otherwise disrupted ceremonies.

School leaders and board members spent the bulk of the meeting debating tradeoffs between preserving on‑campus tradition and reducing weather, safety and logistical risks. Principals from Elkton, the School of Technology, Beaumont, Northeast, Perryville and Rising Sun described both emotional attachments families have to home‑field graduations and recurring practical problems such as lightning/tornado watches, speaker and power failures, extreme heat and vandalism.
