“He has been a consistent advocate for the fire department’s needs at many city council meetings and kept council informed about city services, especially during hurricane seasons,” one speaker said. Attendees also highlighted community traditions DeCamillo helped create, including an annual Santa convoy that distributes toys to children from a fire truck.
Remarks at the event acknowledged that DeCamillo often prioritized staff and department needs over personal gain; speakers said he once turned down a raise so funds could be used for personnel.
No successor, interim appointment or specific transition timeline was announced during the remarks. City officials invited DeCamillo to remain engaged with the community in retirement.
