Board hears Fall event schedule, Arbor Day and facility updates

Parks staff provided a slate of upcoming events and capital-improvement updates at the Sept. 9 advisory board meeting.
Chris Vasquez, park superintendent, announced the city’s second annual Arbor Day will be held Wednesday, Oct. 22, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Liberty Park. The program will include table-top presentations on native trees, water conservation and pollinators, an education component for students and a ceremonial tree planting.
Deputy Director Valerie Derrick outlined other seasonal programming: the Shooting Stars youth track meet on Sept. 13 at Cheyenne Park; Hispanic Heritage Month events Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 at neighborhood recreation centers; family golf day Sept. 20; family movie screenings at Craig Ranch and neighborhood centers in late September and early October; and a month-long pumpkin patch at Craig Ranch Regional Park during October.
Derrick said the city is partnering with a vendor that previously coordinated Taco Fest to operate the pumpkin patch and related family activities. She also said volunteer tree-planting opportunities are planned: Make a Difference Day volunteer planting on Oct. 25 and a second volunteer event on Nov. 8 at Cheyenne Ridge Park.
Regarding facilities, Derrick said Silver Mesa Recreation Center’s two main restrooms are undergoing renovation, with temporary portable toilets on site; the restroom work and related staff-area improvements are expected to be completed in roughly 30–40 days. She said the multiuse fields at Craig Ranch are open for general use and that about 75% of the adjacent parking area is currently available to the public.
Staff noted the Spooky Splash event is scheduled for Oct. 24 and that the Silver Mesa pool renovation work would not impact that event. Board members thanked staff for responsiveness to resident landscaping concerns and were encouraged to attend the listed events.
