San Antonio Building Standards Board orders demolitions for multiple unsafe structures, approves repairs for one property
Summary
At its Sept. 11 meeting the board authorized demolition of several accessory and main structures across the city, gave one owner 90 days to complete repairs after submitting permits and documents, and noted recent emergency demolitions conducted by staff.
The San Antonio Building Standards Board on Sept. 11 ordered demolition of several dilapidated structures and set repair and demolition deadlines after hearing reports and testimony from Development Services staff, police and property owners.
City staff told the board that four properties had already been demolished as emergency removals following fires, and the board heard full cases on six additional properties. Staff recommended demolition for accessory structures at 829 West Hutchins Place, 407 Lorraine Boulevard and 132 Enrique Street; demolition for the main structure at 215 West Meadow Lane Drive and at 132 Enrique Street; and a mixed outcome at 1338 Brighton Street in which staff recommended demolition of the main structure and repair of the accessory. The board voted on each recommendation and carried the motions unanimously.
Why it matters: Board orders use the city code to remove or repair structures the city deems hazardous to public health and safety and can affect neighbors’ quality of life, property owners’ finances and whether the city must later abate properties and charge liens.
Staff briefings and emergency demolitions
Jenny Ramirez, code enforcement manager with the City of San Antonio Department of Development Services, opened the staff update by listing four emergency demolitions carried out after fires: 107 Duffield (demolished Aug. 8, 2025, following a fire Aug. 1), 1622 North Hamilton Street (demolished Aug. 15, 2025, following a fire April 15), 719 Ogden Street (demolished Aug. 22, 2025, after a fire Aug. 15) and an accessory structure at 1202 Sims (demolished Aug. 25, 2025, after a fire Aug. 19). Ramirez told the board those cases fall under City Code, Article 8, Chapter 6, Sec. 6-175 and require no further board action.
