Commission approves rooftop Azteca restaurant sign with conditions to reduce visual overlap

The Historic and Design Review Commission approved a rooftop sign for a new restaurant rooftop near the Azteca Theater (agenda item 2) but attached a condition requiring the sign be lowered, centered between the second-floor brick band, and modestly reduced so it does not appear to imitate or compete with the theater’s historic marquee.
Commissioners expressed concern that the proposed circular logo and its placement could create a “false dialogue” with the Azteca marquee and asked the applicant to separate the new signage visually and proportionally from the theater element. Several commissioners suggested moving the logo lower, centering it over the second-floor window band, or reducing its size so it does not appear to be part of the theater sign.
The motion to approve with the staff stipulations and the additional direction to lower and center the sign on the southwest corner was seconded and passed unanimously.
