Parks advisory board recommends itself as Keep Anna Beautiful committee; board also approves minutes and adds spring youth soccer to next agenda

The Parks Advisory Board voted on Sept. 15 to recommend that City Council appoint the board as the city’s Keep Anna Beautiful volunteer committee after Community Enhancement Coordinator Olivia Demings described the program’s volunteer and education activities.

Demings told the board Keep Anna Beautiful, an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, started about four years ago and focuses on litter cleanups, volunteer adoption of park spaces, gardening and landscaping education, household hazardous-waste events and tree-planting initiatives. "We achieved this through promoting community litter cleanups, engaging community pride, enhancing public spaces, and providing practical education to our neighbors," Demings said.

Demings described recent recognitions and program highlights, including a governor’s community achievement award tied to a landscaping grant, four consecutive Tree City USA designations, Scenic City recognition and Silver Star status with Keep Texas Beautiful. Demings said the program supplies cleanup kits to volunteers, hosts twice-yearly promoted cleanups, supports an adopt-a-spot quarterly program, runs gardening classes with Master Gardeners and Texas A&M AgriLife partners, and coordinates household hazardous-waste drop-offs at park events.
