San Antonio public safety committee reconfirms subcommittees, approves May 19 minutes

The San Antonio Public Safety Committee approved the minutes from its May 19 meeting and used its session to reaffirm committee responsibilities and subcommittee assignments.

Committee members said the meeting would focus on the committee’s charge — public safety policy, emergency preparedness, animal care, lighting and shade — and on work already underway in two subcommittees: one on interpersonal violence and one on elder abuse and exploitation. Councilmember Castillo Anguiano and another councilmember were named to subcommittees; Councilmember Spears was assigned to the elder-abuse work, and staff member María identified who will staff each subcommittee.

Members emphasized turning existing data into usable policy recommendations and prioritizing community needs rather than only cataloguing gaps. The committee agreed to collect ideas for the October and November agendas and to bring briefings back to the full committee. María said the mayor had requested monthly updates of the committee’s work; staff will circulate those updates to the mayor and committee members within 10 days after each meeting.

At the start of the session the committee held a single formal vote: to approve the minutes of May 19, 2025. The motion was made, seconded and passed by voice vote; no named mover or seconder was recorded in the transcript.

Committee members also discussed administrative follow-ups, including assigning who will lead particular data reviews and requesting short briefs at the next meeting summarizing survivor experience surveys and service gaps. Several councilmembers asked staff to return with more granular data on protective-order violations, shelter placements and coordination with county courts.

The meeting then moved to scheduled presentations from city staff on interpersonal violence and elder-abuse prevention and response.
