Kaufman County introduces Sarah Metringa as new family and community health agent, effective Oct. 1

Kaufman County Commissioners Court on Sept. 16 introduced Sarah Metringa as the county's new family and community health agent with an effective date of Oct. 1.

Judge and county officials outlined Metringa's background and the county portion of her compensation. County staff said Metringa previously served as a Better Living for Texas agent in Harris County and has worked in roles including a teacher assistant in the Department of Engineering Technology at Sam Houston State University and as a community engagement manager at an apartment complex in the Houston area. She holds a bachelor of science in agricultural business and a master's degree in general agriculture, both from Sam Houston State University.

County staff told the court the county portion of Metringa's salary will be $38,046, with an additional $6,500 for travel. Staff also explained benefit and payroll treatment: the county's portion of salary will be subject to Social Security and Medicare withholding; unemployment insurance and workers' compensation coverage will apply to the county portion; and, because county agents participate in the state Teacher Retirement System (TRS), personnel serving as county agents are ineligible for concurrent membership in a separate county retirement program. The parties discussed routine program participation such as state fairs and district food challenges where the agent will represent the county.

Metringa addressed the court directly and said she was "so thrilled" and "very excited and full of energy to get here." County officials welcomed her and said they look forward to her work in local health and nutrition programs.
