Hays County converts vacant animal-welfare manager post to intake coordinator for regional shelter

Hays County Commissioners on Tuesday approved converting a vacant Animal Welfare Services division manager position into an intake coordinator assigned to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter.
Local health director Matthew Gonzales told the court the new intake coordinator will process animals brought to the regional shelter by county deputies, complete vaccinations and intake procedures, and coordinate adoption outreach and events to reduce shelter hold times. The change aims to reduce deputies—time spent on intake processing so they can return to field duties.
The court voted to convert the currently budgeted position (grade 123) to an intake-coordinator position (grade 116), effective Sept. 16. County staff said the conversion will save money in the short term while placing the operational intake function at the regional shelter; the county—s interlocal agreement with the City of San Marcos provides the framework for county animal-control work at the regional facility.
Commissioners and staff said they expect the position to improve processing capacity and adoption flow and will monitor the arrangement to ensure county statutory responsibilities continue to be met.
