Temecula senior services reports talks, Coronado trip, intergenerational garden and 32nd-anniversary plans

Cecilia Solis, community services supervisor for senior services, told the commission that senior programming remained active in August with educational talks, excursions, arts activities and ongoing garden programming.
Solis said the department hosted two senior talk sessions in August (intermittent fasting on Aug. 11 and life-saving devices on Aug. 25) and organized a senior excursion to Coronado Island on Aug. 13. Arts-and-crafts classes and a birthday celebration for five seniors were among the other August activities she reported.
The intergenerational community garden continues to operate and will host a master compost class in October and November in partnership with the Riverside County Department of Waste Resources, Solis said. The Mary Phillips Senior Center will celebrate its 32nd anniversary with an event on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 10:30 a.m., she added.
Commissioners asked about garden schedules and food use; Solis said the garden is open Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. (10 a.m. during fall and winter), that participants share harvest with fellow gardeners and that surplus produce is shared with lunch-program participants.
Solis said the cool center remained available during heat events and that staff extended weekend hours once during an August heat advisory.
No formal action was taken on the senior services update.
