Superintendent introduces Fallbrook Union High Education Foundation to support scholarships, pool and experiential learning

Superintendent Ilsa Garza Gonzales introduced the Fallbrook Union High School District Education Foundation at the Sept. 10 board meeting, describing it as a newly organized 501(c)(3) nonprofit intended to expand scholarships, modernize the community aquatic center, strengthen arts and athletics programs and support experiential learning for students.

Garza Gonzales said the foundation will manage legacy scholarships and donor-directed gifts, allow the district to accept properties and handle funds that previously were held by outside trustees, and provide a vehicle for community members to invest in programs that state funding does not fully cover. She cited district statistics showing a high proportion of socioeconomically disadvantaged students and framed scholarships as a way to reduce economic barriers to college and career pathways.

The superintendent said the district has an aging pool that needs modernization; the Measure A bond attempt last year failed to pass, she said, and the foundation could accept donations targeted to an aquatic center project. Garza Gonzales described foundation governance, reporting and donor transparency and encouraged community members to donate, volunteer or serve on advisory committees.

Trustees and staff noted the foundation will be a separate nonprofit governed by a community board, and said the foundation will prioritize transparency and stewardship of donor funds. Garza Gonzales said the foundation also will help centralize legacy gifts and manage property donations tied to scholarships and student programs.

No board vote was taken; the foundation was presented as an informational item and staff said they will publicize opportunities to serve and give.
