Parents, boosters ask Fallbrook trustees to reconsider suspension of football coach

Martha (identifying herself as the coach's spouse) told the board she had witnessed the personal toll the decision has taken on her family and described the coach as a mentor to students. "He is a coach not only on the field, but off of the field," Martha said, recounting that he had left the hospital to attend what she called a going-away game on Oct. 25 and that many players and parents continue to support him.
Natalie Pete, president of the Football Booster Club, said parents and players do not understand why Coach Dean received a suspension of five games when, she said, coaches in other sports alleged to have committed worse behavior received lesser discipline. "Parents are telling me this," she said, and asked the district to explain the rationale or to reconsider the decision.
Lindsay Jones also spoke in support of the coach and said she is worried the district is removing staff who connect with students. Jones said she does not condone use of obscenities but contended the coach’s remark was picked up inadvertently and was not directed at students.
Board members listened; no formal action on the coach’s personnel status was taken during the open meeting. Superintendent Ilsa Garza Gonzales announced earlier that matters involving public employment, discipline, dismissal and release were discussed in closed session under applicable Government Code provisions; the board reported no additional details in open session other than the closed-session vote outcomes on specific pending cases and claims.
The public-comment speakers requested a clearer explanation of the discipline process and consistent application of rules across sports. Board members acknowledged the comments but did not indicate a personnel reversal during the meeting.
