Staff provided updates on property monitoring and enforcement items during the Aug. 12 meeting, including site visits, correspondence and emerging structural concerns affecting multiple downtown parcels.
Carrie, the preservation planner, said she had followed up on a list of properties and delivered enforcement letters in some instances. She reported that 1418 West Michigan had been hit by a car (a sign or similar) and that current activity on the property included dye testing and structural evaluation to determine sources of water infiltration and movement. Staff said that 12 West Michigan may also be affected; the building department has required submission of structural stabilization plans by Sept. 3 for that property.
Staff said they are compiling enforcement lists and will coordinate with the building department and the city’s dangerous‑building officer on emergent matters. Commissioners asked staff to track demolition or urgent structural work and to alert the commission when emergency permits or demolition applications are filed. Staff also said new owner inquiries about a building on North Washington (possible demolition or structural work) have resulted in requests for structural assessments and that any demolition would require commission review where the ordinance applies.
No enforcement action was voted at the meeting; staff said they would send letters, pursue inspections, and report back to the commission with findings and required permit submissions.
