The Muscle Shoals City Schools Board of Education approved routine business Tuesday night, including a consent agenda that included a surplus school bus, a personnel report listing multiple hires and reassignments, and five board policy amendments that had been reviewed by employee groups.
Superintendent (name not specified) told the board that district enrollment is “around 2,950,” roughly the same as the prior year’s start, and that a bid opening for HVAC upgrades to the athletic facility is scheduled for Thursday; the board will consider a recommendation to accept or reject the bid at its next meeting.
The consent agenda, presented as a single package, included the district financial report and check registry for late July and a recommendation from the transportation supervisor to declare bus 0101 surplus. The board approved the consent agenda by voice vote after no member requested an item be pulled for separate discussion.
Board members also approved the personnel report, which the superintendent summarized for the audience. New hires and reassignments listed in the personnel packet included Summer McClintock as secretary/bookkeeper at Muscle Shoals Career Academy; transfers placing Velvet Black and Christy Mitchell in counseling roles at the Career Academy and Muscle Shoals High School, respectively; Kelly Morrow moving from a paraprofessional role to coordinator of community education; and several after-school tutors and coaches. An interim community education coordinator contract was approved through the end of the semester. The personnel items were approved by voice vote after motions and a second.
The board approved five board policy amendments in a single vote. The superintendent said the policies had been discussed at a prior work session and reviewed by AEA and MSEA; no board member pulled a policy for separate consideration. The motion carried on a voice vote.
At the start of the meeting the board secretary conducted roll call. The superintendent presented certificates from the Alabama Association of School Boards indicating the board and its members had completed required training. The superintendent also recognized three student ambassadors from Muscle Shoals High School — Hudson Jones, Ethan Ray and Diamond Eggleston — noting the ambassadors may attend future meetings to provide student input.
Budget work remains active. The superintendent and board members said staff will continue refining the draft budget and monitor pending revenues; they said the district aims to be cautious about one-time supplemental payments to employees and expected a decision by the Sept. 11 meeting. The superintendent thanked staff involved in budget preparation and noted that some requested funding remains outstanding.
With routine business concluded, the board adjourned.
